BMW has launched the third generation MINI – or the tenth generation if you count the classic Mini (Mark I through VII).

The new model replaces the original MINI, launched in 2001 and the updated version of 2006.

The MINI has enjoyed a long tenure at the top of the high-end compact car market, but is this national treasure right for your fleet? I had a chance to look around the new MINI recently, and I think it is.

Here are 10 reasons why (in a mini format):

  1. Is it new? Really? Clever evolutionary styling means the new MINI retains all the characteristics of its predecessor. But it is all new.
  2. It’s bigger all round. The new MINI has grown. It’s longer (+98mm), wider (+44mm), taller (+7mm). The wheelbase is longer (+28mm) too providing more interior room and 211 litres of boots space (+51 litres).
  3. Three’s company. Three new TwinPower Turbo Technology engines, two of which are three-cylinders. MINI Cooper has a 136 bhp 1.5 litre three-cylinder engine; MINI Cooper S has a 2.0-litre 192bhp four-cylinder petrol engine; and MINI Cooper D has a three-cylinder 1.5 diesel 116 bhp engine.
  4. Manual or auto? Six-speed manual is standard, with optional six-speed automatic or sports automatic transmission (which ‘blips’ the engine on downchanges). Like the sound of that…
  5. Better for business. CO2 emissions are down all round. The key model for fleets is the MINI Cooper D. The manual model is as low as 92g/km. Auto version is 98g/km.
  6. Better on running costs. Fuel consumption on the MINI Cooper D is now 80.7mpg – on the auto it’s 76.4mpg.
  7. Better connected. Optional MINI connected or MINI Connected XL provide extensive smartphone integration and the wide use of apps. MINI Connected XL also includes networked navigation with Real Time Traffic Information.
  8. More grown up. There’s plenty of ‘big car’ features. Such as a Head-Up-Display which displays information directly in the driver’s line of sight. And road sign detection function Driving Assistant, keeping the driver informed of speed limits.
  9. What about the costs? Prices start at £16,540 for the Cooper models, and £18,650 for the Cooper S.
  10. When does it go on sale? Order now and your new MINI will arrive in March 2014.

The zero emission car you can fill up at a fuel station

What’s the lowest CO2 emission car on your fleet? An electric Nissan Leaf perhaps? Or is your fleet considering the new BMW i3? On the fleet we manage for our clients, the lowest CO2 model we run is the Toyota Auris Hybrid. With CO2 emissions of 91g/km, and combined fuel economy of 72.4mpg, it’s a … Continued

Low carbon equals low cost. Period.

That’s something of a blunt headline, isn’t it? But true, nonetheless. Just look at those bills coming in from the energy firms, slapping on the odd £150 increase to our electricity and gas charges. Can you believe the average bill for both fuels – gas and electricity – has now risen above £1500 a year? … Continued

What’s for dinner?

What’s your idea of a good dinner? One of those £10 supermarket meals for two sitting in front of the TV? Sounds pretty good, I guess… Or something you rustle up – with a piquant jus, of course – based on one of those TV chef programmes? Yeah, sometimes it has been attempted in … Continued

New tech and chopsticks

This week we’ve had a car with no steering, and a car that takes over the steering when you’re not capable. Just where is technology taking us? Let’s swerve first to the car with no steering. OK, that’s a slight exaggeration. Yes, it has steering, but not the sort that connects with the wheels in … Continued

Pies and car leasing

OK, I have to admit it. I was in celebratory mood last week. We’d just been named Small Fleet Leasing Company of the Year by Business Car Manager (you can read about it in my previous blog) – and I was having a few drinks with some friends to celebrate. I might also have mentioned … Continued

Five firm favourites from Frankfurt

In last week’s blog I had a peep under the sheets to see what we could expect at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. It looked pretty exciting. But now I’ve had a chance to look around and – yes – it was fairly fantastic! Choosing five of my favourites was – well, tricky – there … Continued

A peep under the sheets at Frankfurt

September and an odd numbered year. That means only one thing (and not just an autumn that’s full of mists and mellow fruitfulness, although I suspect we’ll get that too). No, I’m talking about the Frankfurt Motor Show. This pantheon to the German motoring industry is just enormous. Massive. Gargantuan. If you ever consider going, … Continued

Are company car drivers still the road-burning stereotype?

Surveys: it must be that time of year again. And it’s always easy to take a pop at the company car driver or the paid-for fleet car. One survey I read suggested that drivers of BMWs and Audis are ‘arrogant’ and ‘rude’, and their drivers are considered the most unloved on the road. While top … Continued
