iaa-2015

It’s the big one, the German blockbuster, the amphitheatre packed with the latest class acts, it’s the Frankfurt Motor Show.

It is, also, a good way to lose your shoe leather so large is the German international carfest. Still, that’s always a good excuse to stop for a pilsner. Or two. But that’s another story.

The press days have been and gone but the show is still open to the general public. And there is simply masses and masses to see. So what were the highlights?

Here’s five of my favourites that I picked out to give you a condensed version of the show – and save you the shoe leather!

Alfa Romeo Giulia
Spiritual replacement to the last pretty Alfa Romeo saloon – the 159 – the Giulia certainly looks sharp. It is not just the stunning looks that impress about the Giulia, it’s the fact that in range-topping QV form, this Alfa Romeo can accelerate 60mph in just 3.9 seconds – then carry on to a supercar-baiting 190mph.

Bentley Bentayga
The traditionalists might scoff at the thought of a Bentley SUV, but look at the success Porsche had with the Cayenne and more recently it’s baby SUV – the Macan. Quite. Bentley has dubbed its SUV as  “the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most luxurious SUV in the world”. Some introduction. Can it live up to the hype? On top of the 187mph top speed, the Bentayga, which is powered by a 600bhp twin-turbo W12 engine, scoots to 60mph in just 4.0 seconds. Thankfully, after the ugly concept of 2012, Bentley has chosen to tone down the exterior styling too.

Jaguar F-Pace
Talking of game-changing SUVs…The next logical step in the Jaguar Land Rover success story is this – the F-Pace SUV. Available in two- and four-wheel drive versions from April next year, the range-topping model boasts a colossal 375bhp, from its supercharged V6 – which is borrowed from the F-Type sportscar. Prices will start from £34,170.

Porsche  Mission E Concept
Okay so it’s only a concept, but the Mission E Concept is proof if you ever needed any, that Porsche feels that Tesla has had the electric car market its own way for too long. The impressive headline figures of this five-door Porsche are the 600bhp from the battery powered motor and 0-62mph acceleration in just 3.2 seconds – that’s Porsche 911 territory! Yet despite the performance, Porsche claims a 331 mile range. Expect a production version in 2018.

Vauxhall Astra
The last Vauxhall Astra was a regular top-seller and I think the new one, that debuted at Frankfurt, is likely to carry on this success. On top of the curvier exterior styling, the new Astra boasts a range of new engines that will include a sub 100g/km emission 1.0-litre ECOTEC. The new Astra is also shorter and lighter than the outgoing car, yet it is more spacious. Sounds like a recipe to make it a fleet favourite! The new Vauxhall Astra is on sale in a matter of weeks.

Five Frankfurt Favourites

It’s the big one, the German blockbuster, the amphitheatre packed with the latest class acts, it’s the Frankfurt Motor Show. It is, also, a good way to lose your shoe leather so large is the German international carfest. Still, that’s always a good excuse to stop for a pilsner. Or two. But that’s another story. … Continued

Fuel management and the lower cost of fuel

When was the last time you went past a fuel station and saw the price of diesel was below that of petrol? Quite. I can’t recall either. I have to admit, the first time I thought I had misread the sign; the second time I knew it must be true. It seems the combined effects … Continued

The real business behind a great business

I’m currently very excited. In fact, I usually only get this excited when my football club lift a trophy – but as we’re so early into the season it can’t be that – however this is yet another big moment for Fleet Alliance, so I think my excitment is well deserved. Why? Well, let me … Continued

The Usain Bolts of the sports car world

I don’t mind a bit of athletics. In fact, I’ve been known to strap on a pair of running shoes from time to time. I’ve been keeping an eye on the World Athletics Championship in Beijing – It’s certainly an exciting warm up for next year’s Rio Olympics. One of the highlights for me was … Continued

Four cars for your own Tour de France

I’ve tried cycling. I enjoy it for the odd 25 miles or so. But I’m not what you would call a keen cyclist. Well, the weather in Scotland is not great for staying dry – that’s my excuse! But full marks to Chris Froome, the winner of this year’s Tour de France – three weeks … Continued

Five Fleet Flab Fighters

So how many of you, like me, have been inspired to visit the gym and work off a couple more pounds, after seeing the exploits of those taking part in the recent Wimbledon tennis championships? Or maybe you’ve been inspired by Chris Froome’s second win in the Tour de France? Or even our very own … Continued

Five cool cars for a Wimbledon winner

Its July and the weather is hot with the threat of heavy showers at any time, the strawberries are ripe and sweet, and is that Cliff Richard I see threatening to break into song? This can mean only one thing; there’s a tennis tournament going on in SW19 and whether you like it or not, … Continued

Goodwood is more than a festival of speed

Motorshow or festival? With Goodwood it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins these days. If you’re a car fan like me, it was sad to see the demise of the British Motorshow in 2008, yet rising from the ashes of the summer event in London’s Expo, came the Moving Motorshow, as … Continued

Hybrid is a Le Mans-winning technology

What was that old motor racing saying? Win on Sunday, sell on Monday. Yes, that was it. I’m not so sure that’s the case anymore now that the racing formats have changed so what you see on the track isn’t so showroom recongnizable. But I reckon Porsche’s victory at Le Mans this month – that … Continued

Five hot convertibles for Summer 2015

Was that the start of summer I spotted? A hint of sun; a breath of warmer temperatures; and the ‘official’ start of summer at the beginning of June. It all leads to one thing: me getting my top down and choosing my convertible favourites for summer sunshine fun. Here’s my pick of soft-tops for Summer … Continued
