managing-fuel-post-brexit

As the song says, ‘there maybe trouble ahead…’ It’s more than a week on, I’ve just checked, and we’re still going out of Europe – but whatever your feelings post Brexit vote, the consequences of the UK’s decision need to be dealt with, and dealt with now.

One of the most immediate consequences of the referendum has been the suddenly rising cost of fuel – which I’m sure you’ve noticed as you’ve driven past the fuel station signage boards.

How? Fuel prices are affected by the global price of oil, which is traded in dollars. So the less the pound is worth against the dollar means more cost for you at the pumps, even if the price of crude itself is slipping.

In fact, I read a report with interest in the i newspaper that The Petrol Retailers Association estimated fuel prices are likely to go up by at least 3p and possibly as much as 22p per litre in the coming weeks – well there goes my beer tokens in the tank!

The AA is on the case, too, saying prices could rise by 2.25p for petrol in the next two weeks – adding around £1.35 to the cost of filling up a typical 60-litre tank.

So controlling volatile fuel costs is essential – and one of the ways to do this is with a fuel card. It gives your business greater control over how your employees buy and use fuel, as well as access to discounted fuel prices.

Furthermore it can cut your business administration costs – there is usually one invoice from the fuel card company rather than many, many individual invoices from your staff. And with the management information provided on your fuel spend, you can identify excessively heavy fuel users – perhaps they need driver training, or perhaps car choice needs to be reviewed – as well as spotting the potential for fraud.

Apart from a fuel card, how about reviewing the cars you run on your fleet? Are you running the most efficient vehicles? Could a hybrid car make better sense than a petrol or diesel engined car? Or how about offering that all-electric model for staff that regularly travel shorter distances? We have a new ‘ecofleet’ area on our website that can help you with such decisions. Your staff can benefit too from lower benefit in kind exposure.

So despite the economic uncertainty swirling around at the moment, some simple steps mean you can take control and manage future fuel spend while also lowering your employee’s tax liability.

As the posters say, ‘keep calm and carry on’ – but don’t do nothing. Because that way you will be at the mercy of fuel volatility.

Managing rising fuel costs post Brexit

Five reasons why you’ll want to go to Goodwood

June. It’s a great month for sporting events: there’s the Euros of course, but June traditionally means Queen’s Club tennis; Royal Ascot, and that other social staple of the month – Goodwood. This week Lord March’s West Sussex estate again plays host to the largest UK celebration of all things automotive. Brilliant! The theme is … Continued

AFV: why you should get to know this acronym

There’s a Renault Twizy that scoots around where I live. Uber Prius taxis whisper past in full EV mode. One of the local buses is a diesel hybrid, mercifully cutting its engine at the bus stop before pulling away silently prior to the engine re-engaging – to the cleaner air relief of waiting passengers. On … Continued

My automotive guide to Euro 2016

Euro 2016 has well and truly started – that great football tournament that’s second only to the World Cup. From a domestic point of view, it’s great to have England, Wales and Northern Ireland in the finals – with one clear omission, obviously. But despite the non participation of my own home team, the event has … Continued

Cleaning the way to lower emissions

Seems like new London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has barely had the keys to City Hall for five-minutes, but he has still found time to have a look at London’s clean air proposals. One of his policy suggestions is a vastly-extended ultra-low emissions zone, with additional charges for the most polluting vehicles, while also floating the … Continued

My five five-star Chinese crackers from the Beijing Show

My five five-star Chinese crackers from the Beijing Show  So the Motorshow merry-go-round has moved on to China and the capital Beijing. But, it’s not all about the home-grown copycat car makers (although, I admit from what I’ve seen of the show coverage there were still some odd cars!) – the Chinese market is critical … Continued

You might think that most of our fleet work revolves around cars – but we also do a significant amount of commercial vehicles. Our most recent account partner is the Bristol-based catering equipment company Nisbets, whom we now supply with a mixed fleet of cars and commercials. So with the CV Show in full swing … Continued

Why the company car remains such good value

Tricky how to put this…but I suspect those of you who run a company car will find the taxman has lightened your salary a smidge come the end of this month. Larceny? Perhaps. It’s only right to pay your due tax? Probably. Or time to get out of the company car? Hmmm… Possibly not. But first, … Continued

Drones: have I seen the future?

I waver over drones. Part of me thinks they are nothing more than buzzy and annoying propeller-powered flying things, mostly used for action flying photography. And then part of me thinks I’m being a luddite when I happened across an article about the Drone Championships in Dubai which was won by a British teenager (some of … Continued
