Is it time for your company to switch to an electric van? We know in many ways that it’s fundamentally a much bigger leap than moving to an electric car.

But perhaps with the Government’s recent announcement of an extension to the Plug-in Van Grant – from end March 2025 for a further 12 months – fleets should give it greater consideration.

Why has the Government extended the Plug-in Van Grant?

The Government says it wants to extend support to help drivers, businesses, and fleets make the switch to cleaner vehicles. It is part of a wider £120m investment in decarbonising transport.

What vans qualify?

Those vans that have CO2 emissions below 50g/km and can travel at least 60 miles without producing any tailpipe emissions.

What grants are available?

  • Small vans less than 2,500kg gross vehicle weight. The maximum discount available for small vans is £2,500. The amount of grant is discounted from the purchase price and is reflected in a lower lease rental.
  • Large vans between 2,500kg and 4,250kg gross vehicle weight. The maximum discount available for large vans is up to £5,000. The amount of grant is discounted from the purchase price and is reflected in a lower lease rental.

The changing choice of company car

Not so long ago, the only company car worth considering was a diesel: low on CO2 emissions, efficient on company car tax, and went for miles on a tank of fuel. A no-brainer. A bit like: what am I going to do on Friday night? You know the answer… But that’s not really the case … Continued
