Understanding and observing the speed limit for the specific vehicle you are operating is key to ensuring your safety and the safety of other road users.

The speed limit for cars in the UK is generally 30mph in urban areas, 60mph on single carriageways and 70mph on dual carriageways and motorways. However, it’s a common misconception that these limits apply to all vehicles, when in fact the speed limit can vary depending on vehicle type.

Vans, for instance, are limited to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways.

Most vans have a lower speed limit than cars and must follow the speed limits for goods vehicles of the same weight. Vehicles under 2 tonnes laden (loaded) weight may qualify as a ‘car-derived van’ or ‘dual-purpose vehicle’. These vehicles have the same speed limits as cars.
