What did you do for Clean Air Day?

(It was June 21, 2018 by the way.)

Here at Fleet Alliance we were walking or cycling to work where it was practical.

Because pollution is a real problem – it affects the air around us, and is responsible for a variety of respiratory diseases.

Air pollution comes from a variety of sources. The main pollutants are carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ground level ozone, particulates, sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbons and lead.

And, of course, vehicles are one of the culprits fingered in air pollution, particularly during morning rush hour when the combination of still air and high vehicle emissions combine to increase pollution levels.

The increase of Ultra Low Emission Zones

It’s little wonder, then, that cities are keen to do something about this. London is a leader in this. In terms of pollution and Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ).

The Mayor of London is introducing a ULEZ area in Central London next year where only the cleanest vehicles can enter without paying a charge. These include petrol, hybrid, electric and Euro 6 diesels. And the Mayor will dramatically extend this area to encompass the Greater London area within three years.

In Glasgow, where Fleet Alliance is based, there is a plan to introduce a low emission zone, although unfortunately, it does not seem quite as progressive as London’s. From the end of this year, 20% of buses will be banned from a designated LEZ area within Glasgow city; and in four years’ time, it will ban entry to the zone for all except the cleanest petrol cars and diesels.

Other cities are also close to introducing ULEZ areas – Newcastle, Sheffield, Southampton, Birmingham, and Leeds – while Oxford plans a Zero Emission Zone.

So what does that mean to us as car users and us as a car and van provider?

As a leasing and fleet management company, we encourage clients to go green where possible. As ever, it depends on what the car is going to be used for.

Diesels remain key to high mileage users and leasing the latest Euro 6 emission standard clean diesel models are essential; but other users can potentially swap to petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric models.

Fleet Alliance director Grant Boardman is doing exactly that. In September he is changing his current diesel SUV to a plug-in hybrid SUV.

It means that, from September, every day Grant commutes his 21 miles into the office, he will do so in zero emission mode. Grant will be doing his bit for Clean Air Day every day. (Read more about Grant’s change to cleaner motoring here.)

It’s worth thinking about how you could change your motoring habits. Do you need to drive to work – or could you walk? Or consider the type of vehicle you drive.

The decision could help you do your part to clean the air a little more. And, as ever, we’re here to help you make the decisions on that cleaner air journey.

Grant goes green

It’s true. After years of company car driving I’m taking my first steps into greener motoring. I’m moving to a plug-in hybrid Volvo XC60. That’s the T8 Twin Engine model with the ability to run up to 28 miles on zero emission mode. Why? Well, there were twin drivers: Fleet Alliance has a big green … Continued

How should you pay for green fuels?

Going green is increasingly important for all businesses. But it’s important to understand the ramifications of electrification. Are electric vehicles correct for your business? How do they fit the mileage profile of drivers? Is there the correct infrastructure at work and at home to support electrification? And if there is, how do you reimburse staff … Continued

Once you plug in, there’s no turning back

Making that leap into the electric world of motoring is daunting. Of that I have no doubt. There’s much to consider, particularly for fleets: recharging infrastructure both at work and at home; range – is an electric vehicle (EV) viable and fit for purpose; and what about vehicle availability? These are not inconsiderable questions. And … Continued

Vehicle CO2 emissions creep up

So, here’s a conundrum. The CO2 emissions from new cars are better (ie lower) than those that they replace. On average, new and updated models in 2017 emitted -12.6% less CO2 than those that they replaced. Turning to new vans, the CO2 emissions of these were lower as well – by -4.8% – reaching a … Continued

Black cab driver goes green

You really know the world is changing when one of London’s black cab drivers swaps out of his iconic diesel cab into an all-new green cab. David Harris is the green convert, collecting the keys to the first LEVC (London EV Company) TX electric taxi to hit London’s streets. The TX is a range extender … Continued

Are you confused by greener car technology?

Did you take delivery of an Alternatively Fuelled Vehicles (AFV) in November? If so, you’ll be one of a rising number. According to the official car data crunchers, the SMMT, AFVs rose over 33% compared to the same month last year. Which means the news on greener technologies is trickling through – because AFVs represent … Continued

Lack of road repair pushes up your maintenance bills

It’s that moment – and we’ve all been there: the sickening metallic bang as your lovely alloy wheel disappears into a pothole and at the same time the car springs compress to the very top of the suspension turret threatening to protrude through the bonnet. And then … …then there’s the dreaded flap, flap, flap … Continued

Are your fleet drivers using technology correctly?

I am a great lover of new technology. I’m not always brilliant at operating it, I’ll be the first to admit, but technology has such potential to improve our lives and the society we live in. It can also dominate our lives in unfortunate ways if used incorrectly – or fail to provide the expected … Continued

What does the future of fleet look like?

One of the advantages of our lofty office at our Skypark HQ is the view. When it isn’t raining of course. Recently I’ve been looking out trying to envisage this: what will the fleet of the future look like? In 2027 – that’s only 10 years away – will we all be moving silently around … Continued
